Choices Challenge #2: Making the Choice to Speak Life Giving Words

I don’t know about you, but I struggled a bit yesterday. I literally had to hold my mouth shut by the end of the day. It may be best for some of us to carry the first challenge for a few more days. For the safety of those we interact with at least. Thank God for grace!

So, yesterday was all about keeping our mouth shut. For today we are going to make a choice regarding what we do when we unleash the sword in our mouths. Remember that old lie we used to believe, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me.” What a crock!!!! That is in no way true. Words can do so much damage. Separating families, causing division and breaking down the human spirit. But words can also be full of life. Building up confidence, encouraging growth, giving love, or sharing truth.

Today we are “making the choice to speak life-giving words”. This is another difficult one. It can really be a mountain climb depending on the environment you spend most of your time in. That opinionated co-worker, the micromanaging supervisor, the hyper-active child, the un-supportive spouse, and the list can go on forever. Each of these life happenings can be a lighter to your wick if you let them. But what if we chose to do the unexpected and put out the flame with quenching words? Words that calm and bring peace instead of causing anger and resentment. What if we speak encouraging words to the people around us?  “Gentle words are a tree of life, a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4. Sometimes all it takes is one encouraging word to change the course of someone’s day or even their life. Words hold the power of life or death. Let’s make a conscious effort to speak gentle words no matter what, no matter who.

Lord, thank you for Your constant grace and protection. Please forgive us where we have failed. We release our tongues to You today. Give us hearts like yours so that our mouths will pour out love and life-giving words to those around us. Help us to use self-control in moments where we feel challenged or offended. Let your Holy Spirit consume our thoughts and surround us so that we can share His peace with others. In Jesus Name Amen!

Good Luck Today!!!!

  1. I just made a canvas that will hang in my office on the wall to the left of my computer. It has Proverbs 16:24 on it: “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Trying to live that on FB, Twitter and email. It slows me down.
