Fishermen Not Used Car Salesmen

One of the world’s most awkward scenarios, is the dreaded car shopping scene. You put your sunglasses and  game face on while you prepare yourself to be bombarded and interviewed by the ambitious sales team. Your whole demeanor changes as soon as you get out of the car and walk on the lot. In your mind you’re trying to figure out how to keep the salesmen at a distance so that you can just shop in peace. Really, you wish that no one would talk to you until you asked for help or are ready to buy. Of course this doesn’t happen so you keep your answers short and sweet trying to avoid being bamboozled. It’s just brutal all together.

Is this how we make people feel as we try to sell them Jesus? Do we create an environment where people feel like they need to brace themselves for awkwardness? Have we become salesmen instead of the fishermen that we are called to be? Jesus said “I will show you how to fish for people” (Mark 1:17) not “I will show you to convince people.”  When we fish, we don’t get down in the water and try to convince the fish to get on the hook. We just put the bait in the water and let the bate do it’s job. It’s the same way we should be fishing for people. If we just put Jesus on, He’ll do the work. We don’t need to convince the fish (people) that the bate is good. If we’re doing our job with how we use the bate, with love and service, they will grab onto Jesus because He will be attractive enough.

Why do we feel like we need to sell Jesus with some fancy, glittery words and flashing lights? Like we need to make Him attractive or something. When did His death and resurrection loose its luster? NEVER. However, there seems to be some details forgotten about what makes Him JESUS and why we “follow” Him. Maybe we just want to see people saved so badly that we add unnecessary options to our job descriptions. This is a grave mistake. With this observation, I figured it would be great to do a small refresher on the words that Jesus Himself gave as instruction for all who follow him.

  1.  “Come follow me and, I will show you how to fish for people” Mark 1:17
  2. “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” Mark 16:15
  3. “Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations” Matthew 28:19
  4. “Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God” Luke 9:60

In the simplest terms, find the people and give them the word. No where in there does it say “take the word and make it look pretty”. Why? Because God doesn’t need our help with cultivating the heart of man. He just wants us to do the job that He’s called us to and plant the seed. But if we aren’t planting the right seed, He can’t do anything with it. Our compromise and over thinking can water down the word and hinder the work of the Holy Spirit. Our people fishing works best when we stay at the handle of the fishing pole and allow the bate to do its job. No need to try and make a sale with the fish.

“Make them Holy by your truth; teach them the WORD, which is truth.” John 17:17
