Don’t Get Lost In The Keeping

“How many shoes can one person pick up in a day?” This is a thought that frequently breezes through my mind as I am bending over to pick up the gazillionth (should totally be a real number) flip-flop off of the living room floor. I mean seriously, why can’t the little critters just put their stuff away? The answer……..because they know I will. *break for laughter*

24 hours in the day and most of those hours I seem to be spending keeping the house from looking like a rocket just touched down in it. Keeping the kids on a school schedule. Keeping my thoughts organized. Keeping people fed. Keeping clean underwear available. Keeping, keeping, keeping! And all to repeat the same thing the next day! But what if, in all that keeping, I’m actually loosing? What if while I am so busy trying to scrub the stick figures off of the walls, I totally miss what God is trying to teach me? or show me? or simply share with me? What if we are getting lost in the keeping?

As individuals, we all have things that we need to accomplish during our day to day lives. But maybe like me you are getting caught up in all the flip-flops from time to time and forgetting to just be present and take a look at what is happening in the midst of the “keeping”. The children that we’ve been blessed and trusted with, the spouse that we have been given to, the friends that have been placed in our care, the hearts that need nurturing near us, the Father that longs to spend time with us.

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,  but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 ESV

These thoughts have plagued me for the last few days as I pray for wisdom in this area. Are we missing our moments to sit at the feet of Jesus? Are we making a conscious effort to be a Mary? Or are we charging full speed ahead in Martha’s shoes? We have the presence of Jesus within us and yet we may still be missing it.

Our daily lives are full of opportunities to just sit at the feet of Jesus as He teaches us and loves on us. There are so many chances for us to be Christ to our loved ones. However, if we are caught up in the “keeping” more than the “being”, we will miss His still small voice calling to us because it will be drowned out by the sound of obligation.

So……..Today is going to be a new day for us! Today, begins a new challenge for us. “THE MARY CHALLENGE”

What you will need: a journal, a pen, listening ears

Everyday for the next week, we will make a conscious effort to sit at the feet of Jesus and/or be Christ to others in the midst of our keeping. Whether that be spending quality time with your kids or spouse, loving on a friend, or simply hearing the voice of Jesus and sitting with Him and enjoying His presence. Write down each time you chose Jesus over obligation, pray and journal about it. We can be the Mary in our own story, if we just recognize who we are in the presence of.

Lord Jesus, please forgive us where we have failed to honor Your presence. Lord give us eyes to see and ears to hear. Help us to slow our hands so that we can redirect them. Thank You for your patience with us as we make mistakes and choose things of  this life over you. Give us wisdom Lord as we embark on this challenge. Help us to be the Mary of our own stories. Call us to your feet Jesus! Speak to us in new ways this week. In Jesus name, AMEN!
